A Zakat Calculator in Notion for Working Out What You Owe
A free Notion zakat calculator for listing assets and liabilities, checking against nisab and working out your obligation, with a record you keep year to year.

Zakat is arithmetic wrapped in a question of scope. The calculation itself is straightforward once you know what counts; the difficulty is assembling the picture, cash across several accounts, gold, investments, money owed to you, debts owed by you, at one moment in the year.
The free Zakat Calculator is a Notion template for doing that assembly properly, with a record that makes next year considerably faster.
What generally counts as zakatable
- Cash: in hand, in current accounts, in savings.
- Gold and silver, valued at the current market price on your zakat date.
- Investments and shares held for growth or trading.
- Business stock and trade goods held for sale.
- Money genuinely owed to you and reasonably expected to be repaid.
And what's deducted
Immediate debts and liabilities reduce the total. The treatment of long-term debt such as a mortgage varies between scholarly positions, which is precisely the sort of question a template can't settle for you. Note your assumption in the template so that next year you're at least being consistent with yourself.
Nisab and the anniversary date
Zakat becomes due when your net zakatable wealth has exceeded the nisab threshold for a full lunar year. The two practical implications: you need a fixed annual date, and you need the nisab value as of that date, since it tracks the price of gold or silver and moves. Pick a date, write it down, and use the same one every year.
Pick your zakat date once and keep it. Consistency is worth more than precision to three decimal places.
The 2.5% is the easy part
Once the net figure is assembled and it's above nisab, the rate is 2.5%, and the calculator does that instantly. Essentially all of the work, and all of the room for error, is in the gathering step, which is why having a structured list of accounts and assets from last year is such a time-saver.
Keep the record
The genuine advantage of doing this in Notion rather than on paper is next year. The list of where your money sits will be almost identical, so the second year is mostly updating numbers rather than remembering accounts. Keeping the record also lets you see your giving over time, which is worth something in itself.
A note on scholarly detail
This is a calculation tool, not a religious ruling. Positions differ on pensions, mortgages, business assets and debt treatment, so if your situation is complicated, ask someone qualified and record the answer in the template. During Ramadan, the Ramadan Planner with Zakat Calculation includes this alongside the rest of the month.
Duplicate the Zakat Calculator and list your accounts once, it's the year you do the work and every year after that it's quick.
