A Notion Weight Tracker for Reading the Trend, Not the Number

Daily weight is one of the noisiest signals in fitness. It moves on water, salt, food volume, sleep, and where you are in the day, often by more than a week of genuine progress. Which is why people who weigh daily and read each number individually tend to feel like they're failing while actually succeeding.

The free Weight Tracker logs daily weight alongside fat mass and muscle mass, and charts progress toward a target so you're reading a line rather than a number.

Weigh daily, judge weekly

This is the whole method. Daily readings give you enough data points for the trend to be meaningful; weekly averages are what you actually look at. A three-pound jump overnight is water. A weekly average that hasn't moved in a fortnight is information you can act on.

  • Same time each day, ideally on waking, before eating.
  • Same conditions, so you're comparing like with like.
  • Record it and move on without reacting to the individual number.
  • Compare weekly averages, never yesterday against today.

Why fat mass and muscle mass matter separately

Body weight alone can't distinguish between outcomes that are opposites. Someone training hard and eating well may see the scale unchanged while fat mass falls and muscle mass rises, which is close to an ideal result and looks like total failure if weight is your only metric. Separating the two prevents an entirely avoidable form of discouragement.

A flat scale with falling fat mass is progress. A scale is simply not equipped to tell you that.

About body composition accuracy

Consumer scales estimating fat and muscle mass are not precise in absolute terms, and it's worth knowing that. They are, however, reasonably consistent, which means the direction of travel is trustworthy even when the exact percentage isn't. Track the change, not the value.

Set a target and a rate

A target with no rate produces either impatience or drift. Deciding both, where you want to be and roughly how fast, gives the chart something to be measured against. Slower rates are almost always the right answer: they're more sustainable, they preserve more muscle, and they don't require a level of restriction that collapses after six weeks.

When to stop weighing

If daily weighing is affecting your mood or your relationship with food, weekly is fine and monthly is fine. The tracker is a tool for information, and information that costs more than it gives isn't worth collecting. Measurements and how clothes fit tell a similar story with none of the daily volatility.

For the training side, see the free Workout Log Tracker or Fitness Tracker Pro for a broader wellness view. Duplicate the Weight Tracker and give it three weeks before drawing any conclusion.
